Description

This Easter Puppy Chow recipe brings a fun and colorful twist to the classic snack mix, using pastel-colored Wilton Candy Melts to coat crispy Chex Rice Cereal, dusted with confectioner’s sugar for a sweet, festive treat. Perfect for Easter celebrations or springtime snacking, this easy-to-make snack is vibrant, crunchy, and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Candy Coating

  • ½ bag pink Wilton Candy Melts
  • ½ bag purple Wilton Candy Melts
  • ½ bag blue Wilton Candy Melts
  • ¾ tsp shortening (like Crisco), divided (¼ tsp per color)

Snack Mix

  • 6 cups Chex Rice Cereal
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar (adjust as needed for coating)

Instructions

  1. Divide and Prepare Candy Melts: Separate the Wilton candy melts into three microwave-safe bowls, one for each color to ensure even melting and easy coating.
  2. Melt Candy Melts: Microwave each bowl for 45 seconds, stir, then continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Thin Candy Melts: Add ¼ teaspoon shortening to each bowl of melted candy melts and stir well to achieve a smooth, liquid consistency that’s easy to coat the cereal without becoming thick or bumpy.
  4. Coat Cereal: Place 2 cups of Chex Rice Cereal in a large Ziploc bag for each color. Pour the corresponding color of melted candy melts into each bag, then gently shake and roll to fully coat the cereal without crushing it.
  5. Spread and Dust: Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper and spread one bag of coated cereal mixture flat. Using a sifter, sprinkle confectioner’s sugar evenly over the mixture.
  6. Mix Sugar and Candy: Lift the edges of the waxed paper and gently roll the cereal mixture around to ensure the confectioner’s sugar thoroughly coats the warm candy-coated cereal. Repeat sifting and rolling until the desired coating is achieved.
  7. Chill to Set: Place the coated cereal on the waxed paper in the refrigerator for about five minutes to allow the candy melts and sugar coating to harden.
  8. Repeat for Each Color: Perform steps 5 through 7 for the remaining two colors until all cereal is coated and set.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 6 cups of Easter Puppy Chow.
  • If candy melts are too thick, adding shortening thins them for smoother coating.
  • Use different pastel-colored candy melts for customized holiday themes.
  • Adjust confectioner’s sugar amount to suit your preferred sweetness and powderiness.
  • Shake bags gently to prevent crushing the cereal pieces while coating.
  • For extra festive flair, sprinkle candy-coated cereal with Easter sprinkles or colored sanding sugar before adding confectioner’s sugar.
  • Store the finished puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Package in clear bags or mason jars with ribbon for charming gifts or party favors.
