Description

This Easy Calzone Recipe features a homemade dough filled with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a delicious Italian-inspired meal or snack, this calzone combines fresh ingredients with a crispy crust for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Calzone Dough

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tsp yeast
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

Calzone Margarita Filling

  • Tomatoes, sliced
  • Mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s hot enough to cook the calzones to a crispy golden brown.
  2. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast and sugar with warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes bubbly, indicating the yeast is activated.
  3. Prepare Dough: Mix the activated yeast mixture with flour, kosher salt, and olive oil to form a dough. Knead the dough well and then divide it into 4-6 pieces depending on your preferred calzone size.
  4. Roll Dough: Roll each piece of dough into a circle on a floured surface to prepare for filling.
  5. Add Filling: On half of each dough circle, layer sliced tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, and sliced mozzarella cheese.
  6. Seal Calzone: Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and carefully seal the edges by pressing them together to prevent leaking.
  7. Bake: Place the sealed calzones on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven at 450°F for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, you can brush the calzone edges with olive oil before baking.
  • Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite toppings such as pepperoni, mushrooms, or olives.
  • Make sure the tomatoes are sliced thinly to prevent the calzone from becoming soggy.
  • Allow the calzones to cool for a few minutes before eating to avoid burning your mouth with hot cheese.
