Ingredients
Scale
Calzone Dough
- 1 cup warm water
- 3 tsp yeast
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Calzone Margarita Filling
- Tomatoes, sliced
- Mozzarella cheese, sliced
- Fresh basil leaves
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s hot enough to cook the calzones to a crispy golden brown.
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast and sugar with warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes bubbly, indicating the yeast is activated.
- Prepare Dough: Mix the activated yeast mixture with flour, kosher salt, and olive oil to form a dough. Knead the dough well and then divide it into 4-6 pieces depending on your preferred calzone size.
- Roll Dough: Roll each piece of dough into a circle on a floured surface to prepare for filling.
- Add Filling: On half of each dough circle, layer sliced tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, and sliced mozzarella cheese.
- Seal Calzone: Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and carefully seal the edges by pressing them together to prevent leaking.
- Bake: Place the sealed calzones on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven at 450°F for 12-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
Notes
- For a crispier crust, you can brush the calzone edges with olive oil before baking.
- Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite toppings such as pepperoni, mushrooms, or olives.
- Make sure the tomatoes are sliced thinly to prevent the calzone from becoming soggy.
- Allow the calzones to cool for a few minutes before eating to avoid burning your mouth with hot cheese.
