Description
Festive Frizzled Onions are crispy, golden-brown onion rings made by soaking thinly sliced yellow onions in buttermilk, then coating them in seasoned flour and frying until delicately crispy. Perfect as a festive garnish or a savory snack, these onions add a delightful crunch and rich flavor to any dish.
Ingredients
Scale
Onions and Soaking
- ½ pound yellow onions (2 to 3 small), very thinly sliced and separated into individual rings
- 1½ cups buttermilk
Breading
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Frying
- Canola oil, for frying (amount varies according to the size of your pot)
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions: Peel and slice the yellow onions very thinly into individual rings, separating them gently so they don’t clump together.
- Soak in Buttermilk: Place the separated onion rings into a bowl with 1½ cups of buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 10 minutes to ensure the onions become tender and take on a slight tang.
- Mix the Flour and Salt: In a separate shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour with 1 teaspoon of salt, ensuring the salt is evenly distributed in the flour.
- Coat the Onions: Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off, then dredge them thoroughly in the flour mixture, making sure each ring is well coated for maximum crispiness.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep pot or skillet, heat an ample amount of canola oil to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for frying. The oil should be deep enough so the onions can float and crisp evenly.
- Fry the Onions: Carefully add the coated onion rings in batches to the hot oil. Fry them for about 2 to 3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy, stirring occasionally to avoid clumping.
- Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the onions from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Ensure onions are sliced very thinly for optimal crispness.
- Use buttermilk as it tenderizes the onions and adds subtle tang.
- Heat oil to the correct temperature to avoid soggy or greasy onions.
- Do not overcrowd the pot to maintain oil temperature and even frying.
- Can be seasoned with additional spices like smoked paprika or cayenne for extra flavor.
