Description

This Pizza Grilled Cheese recipe combines the comforting meltiness of a classic grilled cheese with the bold flavors of pizza. Featuring gooey mozzarella, tangy marinara sauce, and crispy turkey pepperoni nestled between seasoned, buttered bread, this quick and easy sandwich is perfect for a satisfying lunch or light dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp butter (softened)
  • ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then sprinkle the buttered side evenly with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to add extra pizza-inspired flavor as the bread toasts.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread on a flat surface, buttered side down. Spread marinara sauce evenly on the unbuttered sides of both slices. Layer shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan, and turkey pepperoni on top. Add any additional toppings if desired. Finish by placing the remaining two slices of bread on top, buttered side up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula to help the cheese melt and the bread brown evenly. Flip carefully to avoid spilling the filling. Continue cooking until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted inside.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute for easier handling. Slice each sandwich in half diagonally and garnish with fresh chopped basil for a burst of herbal flavor. Serve alongside extra marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use any bread of your choice; sourdough adds a nice tangy flavor.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit turkey pepperoni or substitute with vegetables like roasted peppers or mushrooms.
  • Adjust the seasoning amounts according to your taste preferences.
  • Use low heat to prevent burning the bread while allowing the cheese ample time to melt.
  • Fresh basil is optional but highly recommended for a fresh aromatic touch.
