Description

A festive and delightful Reindeer Cheese Ball perfect as a Christmas appetizer. This cheesy, creamy ball combines cream cheese, sour cream, cheddar, and ranch seasoning, coated in crunchy pecans and decorated with olives, a cherry tomato, and pretzels to resemble a reindeer face and antlers. Ideal for holiday parties and easy to prepare ahead of time.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 (8 ounce) blocks cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 8 ounce block medium cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 23 tablespoons ranch seasoning mix

Coating and Decoration

  • 2 cups roughly chopped pecans
  • 2 medium pitted black olives, for the eyes
  • 1 cherry tomato, for the nose
  • 2 regular sized pretzels, for the antlers (I used Snyder’s Olde Tyme Pretzels)

Instructions

  1. Soften the Cream Cheese: Allow the cream cheese to sit at room temperature until it becomes soft and easy to mix, about 30 minutes.
  2. Mix the Base: In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and 2-3 tablespoons ranch seasoning mix. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Form the Cheese Ball: Using clean hands or a spatula, shape the cheese mixture into a firm ball.
  4. Coat the Ball: Roll the cheese ball in the chopped pecans, pressing gently so the nuts stick to the surface evenly, covering the entire ball.
  5. Chill: Place the cheese ball in the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour. This helps it firm up and flavors to meld.
  6. Decorate the Reindeer Face: Remove the cheese ball from the refrigerator. Use the two pitted black olives to create eyes on the front of the ball. Attach a cherry tomato below the eyes to form the nose. Finally, insert the two pretzels on top as antlers, pressing gently so they stay in place.
  7. Serve: Place the decorated cheese ball on a serving platter and serve with crackers, bread slices, or vegetables of your choice.

Notes

  • Softening the cream cheese properly is essential for easy mixing and a smooth texture.
  • You can adjust the amount of ranch seasoning to taste, depending on how strong you want the flavor.
  • For best results, prepare the cheese ball a few hours ahead or the day before to allow flavors to blend well.
  • Use a firm cheddar for better texture and flavor contrast.
  • The nut coating adds a nice crunch and helps the shape hold; you can substitute pecans with walnuts or almonds if preferred.
  • Keep the cheese ball refrigerated until ready to serve to maintain freshness.
