Description

This classic Hamburger Steak recipe features juicy ground beef patties seasoned with savory spices, then pan-fried to perfection and served with a rich mushroom and onion gravy. A comforting and hearty dish perfect for any meal, enhanced by a flavorful buttery sauce with Worcestershire and garlic.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Steaks

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided

For the Sauce

  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, salt, bread crumbs, and egg. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat to keep the patties tender.
  2. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized oval or round patties. Set aside while you prepare the sauce ingredients.
  3. Cook the Steaks: Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and keep warm.
  4. Prepare the Sauce Base: In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions over medium heat until they soften and begin to brown, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  5. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked mushrooms, onions, and garlic, stirring constantly to form a roux. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Combine and Serve: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the mushroom gravy over them. Let them simmer together for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors and heat through. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh breadcrumbs or panko for a lighter texture.
  • For extra tenderness, soak the bread crumbs in a little milk before mixing them into the meat.
  • Adjust seasoning in the sauce to your preference, adding more Worcestershire sauce for tanginess.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or rice for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
