Description

This Simple Salisbury Steak recipe features savory beef patties made from lean ground beef, seasoned with classic spices and cooked in a flavorful brown gravy. The patties are tender and juicy, complemented by a rich, homemade gravy made from brown gravy mix, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. This comforting dish is quick to prepare, perfect for an easy weeknight meal served alongside mashed potatoes or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Patties

  • 1 lb Lean Ground Beef
  • 1/3 cup Bread Crumbs
  • 2 tsp Ketchup
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

Gravy

  • 2 packets Brown Gravy Mix
  • 2 cup hot Water
  • 1 tsp Ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the lean ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated without overworking the meat. Shape the mixture into evenly sized patties, about 4 to 6 depending on desired size.
  2. Cook the patties: Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat with a light coat of oil. Place the beef patties in the skillet and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the patties and brown the other side for another 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the patties and set aside keeping them warm.
  3. Prepare the gravy: In the same skillet with the drippings, whisk in the brown gravy mix packets and gradually add the hot water while stirring to prevent lumps. Stir in ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat until the gravy thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Combine and simmer: Return the cooked patties to the skillet with the gravy, spooning some gravy over the top. Reduce the heat to low and let the patties simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes to meld the flavors and heat through.
  5. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak patties hot with the rich brown gravy spooned over the top, ideally accompanied by mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and keep the patties tender.
  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to avoid tough patties.
  • If preferred, homemade brown gravy can be substituted for the packets for a fresher taste.
  • Adjust seasonings such as salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to taste.
  • Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
