Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 12 sweet rolls
- 10 slices provolone cheese
- 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef
Topping and Sauce
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 3 cups water
- Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and coat them in the butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12 to 15 minutes until the onions are soft, browned, and caramelized but not burnt.
- Season Onions: Add the minced thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper to the skillet with the onions. Stir to combine thoroughly, then remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Take the sweet rolls out of their package, keeping them intact as a whole block. Slice horizontally so you have tops and bottoms separated. Place the bottoms cut side up in an 11×7-inch baking dish.
- Assemble Sliders: Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the bottom rolls. Then add the sliced roast beef evenly on top, followed by the caramelized onions spread out over the beef. Add the remaining cheese slices on top, then place the tops of the rolls back on.
- Brush with Butter Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and dried onion soup mix until combined. Brush or pour this mixture evenly over the tops of the assembled rolls for added flavor and browning.
- Bake Sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil, ensuring the foil does not touch the tops of the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for another 5 minutes to brown the tops perfectly.
- Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy mix according to package directions using 3 cups of water. Serve the sliders warm garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired, alongside small bowls of au jus for dipping.
Notes
- Dried thyme may be used instead of fresh; use half the amount called for.
- You can substitute any slider buns, but sweet rolls add a nice balance of flavor.
- Provolone and mozzarella are ideal cheeses for meltiness and flavor, but feel free to use your favorites.
- The au jus dipping sauce is optional but adds a depth of savory flavor that complements the sliders beautifully.
- These sliders freeze well; wrap tightly in foil or plastic wrap and reheat gently before serving.
